Church on the Piazza, Ravello

This unassuming church, built on the Piazza Vescovado, the main square of Ravello, in the 11th Century and renovated in 1786, contains a surprising interior. My first blog post showing the inside of the church features Byzantine lions holding up one of the two 13th Century pulpits. Today on my Animal Art Along the Way blog, I'm posting two mosaic peacocks on the other pulpit.

I was taken aback by the combined simplicity and artistic beauty of the Byzantine interior of this church on the Piazza Vescovado, the main square of Ravello. My first blog post showing the church's interior features the lions holding up the other of the two 13th Century pulpits in this photo on Tapirgal's Daily Image. The church was built in the 11th Century and renovated in 1786. This post shows the outside of the church on the piazza.

The Palazzo Look

I found the textured fortified-palazzo look of this building fascinating. I have no idea what the history is. Note also the shrine about mid-way up on the right side of the building. I don't know who could worship there, but maybe that's not the point. I have very little reference for Catholic culture. It's too bad about the graffiti.
