Beautiful Owl

Seattle, Washington ~ May 5, 2008
Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata)
Woodland Park Zoo

We had been to see the tapirs as usual, and as we walked down a path toward another part of the zoo, we encountered a volunteer, Libbie Mistretta, with the most beautiful owl perched on her hand. She was introducing passers-by to this spectacled owl, which can be found all the way from Mexico to Argentina. I love the detailed snowflake-look of the feathers in front of its eyes. I posted a photo of this same owl earlier.

In Focus

Feral Rock Pigeon (Columba livia domestica)
Napili, Maui, Hawaii ~ May 9, 2010

It's always a challenge. With most animals, it seems that focus is at least half the success. I do enjoy watching pigeons, and they're tame enough to let me practice.

An Egret at Maryhill

Maryhill, Washington ~ October 5, 2003

Down the slope is the Columbia River. On the other side are miles and miles of arid, rocky terrain. Yet inside the Maryhill Museum of Art you'll find world-class exhibits of European origin. Sam Hill wanted his wife to forget about her life in Minneapolis and be content with him here in the West. It didn't work out, but he left an unusually interesting legacy and many miles of good roads. And this bronze egret.

Brilliant Brazilian Cardinal, Maui

Brazilian or Red-crested Cardinal, Maui, Hawaii
Brazilian or Red-crested Cardinal, Maui, Hawaii Red-crested or Brazilian Cardinal (Paroaria coronata)
Napili, Maui, Hawaii ~ May 8, 2010

I could hardly believe the flaming red color when this cardinal hopped onto the table at our hotel in Maui. I'd never seen one before on my trips to other Hawaiian islands, but this bird visited us several times each day. It didn't come around often enough that I had much time to take photos, but I did take a few, and I have two more to show you tomorrow. It was a quick little bird, active and somewhat skittish, and so it was harder than the other visiting birds to get into focus.

The Brazilian cardinal was introduced from South America to Oahu about 1930.
