I always like taking pictures of this mountain, and it's a challenge from a moving car. It pops into view for just a second or two and then it's gone. It pops up above the trees again and is gone again. You never get a protracted view with a good camera angle. So, if you don't stop, you often don't get the photo. Since this is the route we usually take between Astoria and Bend, it's a view I've seen many, many times. It's easy to forget to stop and enjoy it. This view is facing approximately east - going from Astoria/Portland over the pass and into the high desert. Early October is often the time with the least snow and the smallest glaciers. Already this year (2010; note that the photo is 2004) it's dumped snow at least once or twice, changing the face of the mountain, getting ready for winter and all those who come to play in the snow (ski, snowboard, hang out at the lodge). Mount Hood

This is Mt. Hood as seen from the lodge at Mount Hood Meadows. I don't ski, so I entertained myself by checking out the mixed drinks. I don't drink that much, either, so let's just say a little went a long way. I remember the day as being especially enjoyable, especially the second part of the day. I watched ants in brightly-colored parkas going up and down the mountain, up and down, up and down, up and down. You get the picture. Meanwhile, the clouds (the real ones) caused the mountain to fade in out of view like the Cheshire Cat.

Mt. Hood in evening's glow

I took this photo as I drove from Bend to Astoria. Highway 26 approaches Mt. Hood, winding across its shoulder and down the other side into Portland. I must have been in a particular mood or the lighting was just right, because I was compelled to stop and take photos several times. Both of the photos of Mt. Hood on this blog so far are from the same day. They're taken from different places along the road, and each has a unique character.

Mt. Hood is a classicially beautiful volcanic mountain with many scenic points for viewing. It can be seen from Portland as well as from the high desert of Central Oregon. It's also the volcano in Oregon considered most likely to blow, although the odds that it will do so in the next 30 years are reported to be only 3 to 7 percent.
