Another Sea Lion on the Astoria Docks

I imagine that sea lions will show up fairly often on this blog, because they spend so much time on the docks here in Astoria. I enjoy watching them and trying to get photos that are in some way active or expressive and also in focus!

Sea Lion Teeth
If you've always wondered what a sea lion's teeth look like, today's animal photo is just for you. Corinna Bechko of The Frog Bag tells me that one sure way to distinguish sea lions from seals is that a sea lions can bite you unpside down. I didn't ask this dozing pinneped if that's true, but I'll assume that it is. In this position, you can also see the direction the sea lion's nostrils close when it dives under water.

Indian Mongoose in Hawaii
While this is not a great photo, I was thrilled to get it. We were parked at a bookstore on the edge of a shopping center, and we spied this bold mongoose on some rocks near the car. While it scampered away, I managed to get a quick photo. Trust me, they are FAST! Mongooses are an invasive species in Hawaii. You can read about them via the "Instant Hawaii" link above.
