Interesting Old Digs

We stayed in this former coaching inn from the 17th Century for a couple of nights. I loved the old building (and cheaper than most Holiday Inn Express Hotels). We got to chat about history with some of the staff, but I vowed to carry my own blankets next time. Under a featherbed comforter, you roast. Throw it off and you freeze. I'm used to layering covers, and I never got the hang of how to sleep Old England Style. Any hints?
By the way, I'm re-thinking my blogs, and I intend to make "Tapirgal's Daily" a daily blog again. Or close enough. It will help when I get my used photos re-named with the date first so I can tell quickly if I've already used a photo or not. Apologies for any you've seen before.

I'd been trying to figure out why this says "Metra" instead of "Metro" or even "Metropolitain." Then I realized (duh) I could easily look it up. It turns out that Metra is the actual name of the commuter rail division of the Illinois Regional Transportation Authority. Thanks, Wikipedia!

Welcome to a Park Called "Friendship"

La Amisad International Park is a World Heritage site, home to critiacally-endangered wildlife (including Baird's tapirs) and situated on the boundary between Costa Rica and Panama. We visited the Panamanian side and took an easy hiking trail through the magnificent rainforest. Animals were scarce here, but majestic and fascinating plants flavored our visit.

Caught Short?
London ~ February 14, 2010On Valentine's Day this pair seems to be sharing a dilemma at least, if not a romantic moment. When I took the photo on Oxford Street, I thought it might be giving us the number to call when toilet paper ran short ("caught short" seems to imply that), which I found to be a common occurrence in the busy London loos. But no. When I got home and looked at the photo, I realized it was an ad for a cool English innovation which I had read about, intended to try, and then forgotten. You can text the word "toilet" to a particular number and get the location of the nearest public convenience! How wonderful is that? We should set that one up in the U.S.

The lighting was poor, and we were walking quickly up Smith Street to reach Warwick Castle before closing. Despite the rush and the unhelpful sky, tavern signs all over the UK make compelling targets for roving photographers on the prowl for animal art. The link above is about roe deer. It looks like this tavern needs a good web site. I found lots of basic listings on food and drink listings, but nothing worth linking to.
