I'm sure they're not demolishing the hill. There are a lot of naturally-weathered features out there. I'm not sure where the main digging takes place, or if they mostly wait until fossils are exposed. The area is gigantic, and I believe they actually have two or three visitors' centers. There is a supervised area where the public can dig for smaller fossils. We didn't even begin to see the whole area. In a sec I will link to another part of the area with a beautifully weathered hill with red stripes. Last night I forgot to make the link.

just looking at the picture gives me chills. I can't wait to go out there again. Let's dig for fossils!

Fascinating...so what kind of fossils does one find there? And since when do fossils need beds? ;-)
We just arrived home after driving almost 4000 miles to Colorado and back...I'm trying to play catch-up but it's probably impossible.
