Ancient-looking Beasts in Modern Pompeii

Pompeii, Italy ~ April 18, 2004

This was the floor in a hotel lobby where we stayed. The black thing is nothing more than a rubber mat to keep people from slipping in the rainy weather. Of course, now I wish I'd gone down and removed it before taking the photo, but you know how it is - you've been walking all day, you're exhausted, and one more step seems like one step too many. *Snap!*

Deco is Everywhere

New York ~ May 8, 2009

One of the many fun things about being in New York City after having not visited for so many years (decades) was finding delightful Art Deco designs everywhere I looked. I'm sure that when I was there in 1969 (?) I didn't even know what Deco was.

Green Sea Turtle, Kaua'i

September 25, 2006

There's nothing like swimming in the ocean and discovering that you're not alone.

One of the first things I noticed about sea turtles is how placid they seem, although they're clearly aware of you and are not that happy about having you in their space.

It's hard to desceribe what it's like being close to one of these big, peaceful reptiles. It seems ageless, and timeless as it goes on its way reflecting diffused and ripple light patterns in its suspended world.

This turtle has gotten tired of me and flaps away like a bird in slow-mo.

Near the surface.

Up for air.

Gliding away.

Bye bye.

Chewing Gum

Oxford, England ~ February 19, 2010

I'm not sure why this photo doesn't show it as intensely as I remembered, but I don't think I've seen as much chewing gum on the ground in one place as here outside of a disco in Oxford near the train station.

Willaby Creek

Olympic Peninsula, Washington ~ January 19, 2003
Olympic National Forest

This is the only photo I have of this stretch of the hike. I was taking many fewer photos then, partly because I didn't want to use up my one or two small memory cards. I think it also took some time to get over the old notions of "film" being expensive and my needing to ration the photos. How times change. Anyway, this is the creek we crossed on a hike from the Lake Quinault Uodge to a really gigantic old-growth tree. The only way was to shinny across a very slick slanted log or get completely wet. I remember Lee telling me to think like a monkey, because they don't fall. Strange, but it worked.

Sailfish from Mexico

Mexico ~ Sailfish on a Postage Stamp

Stamp collectors may note that someone (yours truly) has carelessly slashed the stamp between the picture and the perforations. It wasn't out of meanness, but many of the stamps I've saved over the years are for use in the collages I've enjoyed making since 1968, when I discovered that I liked this art form. I've saved bits, images, and whole magazines to play around with when the mood strikes. This stamp was left out of some collage I was making at the time, but saved in the "collage box," and when it came up again, I was thinking "Animal Art" blog.

Pink

Santa Monica, California ~ October 28, 2006

This is not the image I have when I think of Santa Monica - nor is it the image I have when I think of October. These blossoms were a pleasant surprise on a visit in 2006 when we stopped to get something at a boutique grocery store on Montana Avenue.

The flowers were wonderful, but what really surprised me was where they came from. . . .

I hadn't expected to see this huge pink tree reaching for the sky!

Cool Tropical Gothic

Kaua'i, Hawaii ~ September 20, 2005

I can't say I like the missionary thing, but I do love the Gothic-influenced architecture of some of the small wooden Hawaiian churches. I think they go especially well with the landscape, or is that just me?

Classical Eagle and Gryphon

Portland, Oregon ~ August 7, 2010

This eagle and gryphon can be found on a building across the street from Pioneer Square. I did not desaturate or do anything with the color. It's straight color from the camera. Interesting, eh?

A Pig in Ravello

A Pig in the Wall Ravello, Italy ~ April 21, 2004

This little pig poking its nose and trotters out of the wall of an arcaded walkway in Ravello has to be one of the most unexpected discoveries of animals art that I can remember. Just when you think the architecture is looking sedate and refined, here comes a surprise. Oink.

Shining Blue Gem

Shining Blue Jewel, Notre Dame de Paris Paris ~ October 15, 2008
Notre Dame Cathedral, South Ambulatory

I like this photo a lot, but I'm not sure who he is. I love the way the blue jewel catches the light. I've looked in the Blue Gide and the Michelin Green guide, and all I could find is that he could be one of the 18th-19th Century prelates buried there.

An Ancient Design on the Floor?

Mosaic, Probably Roman New York ~ May 7, 2009

I believe this was in the Roman section. Since it's on the floor for everyone to walk on, I think it must be a reproduction or a design meant to recall the period.

Concrete Capybara at a Truckstop

Capybara Art Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ~ April 20, 2007

Although the artwork is not masterful, and the photograph is neither inspired nor in focus, we had fun spotting this painted concrete capybara at a truck stop between Sorocaba and Trindade. Too bad it's the only photo I took of it. I was more interested in capturing the nearby jaguar and tapir sculptures.
