Inky

Salmon Fly on Plants, Deschutes River, Oregon Deschutes River, Oregon ~ May 29, 2004
South Junction

I love the inky blue-black background made by the shadowed edge of the river. If you look carefully, you'll see a salmon fly in the lower right of the picture.

yeah I love this picture and the beautiful salmonfly. To the above comment, the salmonfly is a large insect from the family Pteronarcyidae, which is a stonefly. It crawls as large black nymph among the submerged rocks and then after 3yrs in the water they crawl onto shore and up onto overhanging trees and bushes. The winged adult then emerges. It is usually 2 1/2 inches long. It mates and then the female flies over the water and deposits eggs which sink to the bottom and develop into larvae and then nymphs and the process starts over.

That's interesting, Lee! I wouldn't have seen the salmon-fly either, had you not pointed it out, Sheryl. Nice catch.
