Pigs in Portland
Northwest 23rd Street
They look so animated. What are they talking about?
Today's post for "On the Pavement" also includes animal art.

Tranquil Garden, Ravello
Humpback Whale and Baby
Today's animals are also in a traffic circle, or perhaps more of an intersection, I don't remember. They were much harder to photograph than yesterday's deer. I apologize for the cluttered photo, but every time I come across it in my archives, I want to include it. I loved seeing the nice whales in such an unexpected location. Maybe someday I'll get back there to take a better picture. Or if you have one, maybe you will e-mail it to me :) Someone got some different angles for this page. (Scroll down to the bottom.)

Stepping Stones, Palawan
Bronze Deer and Fawn
You may think I found this beautiful example of ruminant art out in the woods somewhere, but actually, the deer and her fawn can be found inside the traffic circle at SW Simpson Drive and SW Century Avenue (aka 14th Street).
Under the Skin
I could not understand why my photos of St-Sulpice on Google Earth were getting hit so often until I realized that this church had featured so prominently in Dan Brown's cult classic, The Da Vinci Code. Although I'd read the book a few years before, I had not remembered the connection when we were there.

City of New York
This manhole cover was made in India. There were some interesting comments when I posted another metal cover in Astoria, Oregon, that was also made in India. Especially check out the comment by Kcalpesh on that post. I thought maple leaves were the symbol of Canada, so maybe this is a secret passageway to our neighbor to the north.

From the series "Los Angeles Urban Art 2003"
by Francisca
Today I'm posting a random shot from a number of photos Francisca generously loaned for use on this blog. She wrote, "These were all taken on the Metro Train route from LA Airport to downtown . . . each stop has wonderful urban art." Check out Francisca's View Thru My Global Lens.

Everyone's MoMA
MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)
I think everyone takes this photo, and here is my contribution. It was an incredibly beautiful day - perfect temperature, a lovely walk. It was also my birthday, which made the walk with my honey and the visit extra special.
Better than a Briefcase
The turtle-design zipper bag that I bought from an Indian market near Tucson often serves as a travelling briefcase. It has no pockets, but it makes up for it by the smile it puts on my face. Here it sits at my feet on a plane trip to Mexico.

On Oxford Street
All pavement photos are not pretty, but they're interesting in their own way. One of the first things that caught my attention was the incredible variety of metal covers and gratings, their interesting patterns, the words saying where they're located or where they are made. Love the cowboy boot.

A lemur made of shell casings
I wish I'd learned more about this interesting and poignant sculpture, but there was so much to see.

Capricorn near the Altar
St-Denis Basilica
This is the last in my series of zodic animals on the floor near the high altar of St. Denis Basilica near Paris. You can see the others here. A better view of Taurus appears here along with an explanation of how Zodiac signs came to be associated with Christian churches.

Divine Either Way
Divinity School, Bodleian Library
This building is famous for its architecture, particularly the stunning fan vaulting of its Gothic ceiling. If you look away for a moment, you may discover this beautiful grating in the floor.
A Leaping Roebuck
The Roebuck Inn
The lighting was poor, and we were walking quickly up Smith Street to reach Warwick Castle before closing. Despite the rush and the unhelpful sky, tavern signs all over the UK make compelling targets for roving photographers on the prowl for animal art. The link above is about roe deer. It looks like this tavern needs a good web site. I found lots of basic listings on food and drink listings, but nothing worth linking to.

Horses on Parade: Checkerboard Rumps
It's decorative, but I don't know why they do it. I saw horses at St-Michel in Paris a few years ago with the same pattern. They were also on parade. In the second case, it seemed as though they were escorting some dignitary. On October 19, 2008, they were part of a police exibition with all sorts of interactive events taking place.
Note: It's called quartermarking, and VP found the answer. Check out the comments on his post.

Restaurants with outdoor seating line this part of the Deschutes River in Bend. You can enjoy summer activities on or off the water.
Egyptian Ducks
Metropolitan Museum of Art
I love the ancient Egyptian portrayal of animals. What I read somewhere is that because the Egyptians didn't have the rigid restrictions for portraying animals that they did for portraying humans, the animals are depicted more realistically, relying on the artist's perceptions rather than on the learned conventions for human forms. For this reason, they have a particular charm and realism. I love what the dim lighting did for this photo.

Dragonfly Banner, Bend, Oregon
Initially, I took the photo because I liked the festive banners on this upstairs window. When I looked at the photo, I really liked the colors all around it, too - and the reflection.
